Lipman said women are great at advocating for others, but not for themselves.

One striking example of this challenge for women in the workplace is the act of asking for raises. Lipman said that men are four times more likely to ask for a raise than women, something she saw both as an employee and manager in the workplace.

"When I became a manager, the biggest surprise for me was how many men came to my office demanding a raise or a bigger office," she said. "This was a surprise because I never asked for those things for myself, and women who reported to me never asked either."
