1. Overcoming Unconscious Bias

One challenge society needs to overcome is the unconscious gender bias that's entrenched in both men and women, Lipman said.

"We all have this… it's not just a male issue," she said. "These biases are deep inside of us and we're not even aware of them. For example, the waiter will give a check to the man, or if we think of a young, attractive nurse, we think of women."

As an example of how this gender bias is deeply rooted in society, Lipman showed a Google Images search of the term "Doctor," which resulted primarily in pictures of men.
