How Gordon Flesch Company Keeps Focused On The Future

Egos can sometimes get in the way in family businesses. How do you and your brothers make it work?

In family businesses, there's always going to be conflict. That's just natural. I think all three of us have always looked at the business and looked at what it provides and what it could do … Even if we disagree on something, we disagree, [but] we agree on a lot. There's no reason to get mad or hold a grudge, or get upset about something to the point where you would ruin the business because of it. Now we have 500 to 600 employees and provide a good living for a lot of people, so you don’t want to destroy that because of your own ego, your own idea of how things are supposed to go. It's the dumbest thing you could do.

We’ve always worked together on decisions. It's not one person making a decision and [saying] "The rest of you, shut up and that's where were going." That just doesn’t happen in our company.
