How To Tame Latency, The Silent Cloud Killer

Gone In 10 Milliseconds?
The standard response time for on-premises storage latency is sub-10 milliseconds. If network delays prevent applications from meeting that benchmark, they are poor candidates for cloud hosting, Rubin said.
That’s why a recent survey from cloud management vendor RightScale revealed that while 95 percent of enterprises run applications in the cloud or leverage Infrastructure-as-a-Service, only 10 percent have gone all-in to the cloud.
That’s why it’s important for solution providers to understand the potential impact of latency.
Solution providers might want to look at on-site appliance vendors to help their clients around this problem, said Vogel, of Xtium.
“While cloud backup services provide an intriguing option for storing data off-site, services that do not include a local appliance suffer from issues with rapid recovery due to latency constraints during file recovery,” Vogel said.
