In her case, she began building little products and making relationships with factories. At the same time, Gault said, she was harnessing her networking skills for the next step in starting the company: attracting small customers. Next, said Gault, is building teams and relationships with partners to extend the product and get the company off the ground and running.

The fourth step is to raise money then, finally, to scale out the business.
