Governments are looking to take advantage of the Internet of Things, Gartner believes. Some IoT applications include subscription-based taxation models that would reflect usage and behavior — for example, road taxes based on miles driven — as opposed to gasoline sales taxes. Other applications include "smart" waste bin collection, and the remote monitoring of elderly patients in assisted-living settings.

“There are countless new business ventures and even new industries waiting to be formed if there were more access to the volumes of data in the public sector [for] the public and the community to leverage and access,” said Hill. “There has been innovation here and I’m sure there will be more new services and platforms for open data sharing coming online soon.”
