Of all attacks detected in 2016, 63 percent originated from IP addresses in the U.S., Dimension Data found, down only slightly from 65 percent in 2015. Thomas cited the cloud as a key reason, since the company's research suggests that the U.S. is the "predominant" global location of cloud-based infrastructure.

"Clouds by their very nature are designed to be scalable, flexible, and reliable," with the relatively low cost and stability of the public cloud allowing for a "perfect environment" for cyberattacks, Thomas wrote.
