One area that makes security radically different from other areas of technology, such as networking, is that it puts much more weight on a company's reputation, McDonald said. For that reason, he said it’s ill-advised for an MSP or solution provider looking to go into security to rely on a "smoke and mirrors" approach, as that will quickly put it out of business or at least get it into big trouble.

"If you fail once, you can go out of business. Reputation in security is all you have," McDonald said.
