The shortage in qualified people does "direct and measurable" damage, according to 71 percent of the respondents to the Intel survey. One in three say the skills shortfall makes their organizations more desirable targets for hackers, while one in four say a lack of adequate cybersecurity staff has damaged their organizations' reputations and led directly to the loss of proprietary data through cyberattacks.

The Kaspersky study found that businesses in some of the most information-protective industries – defense, ecommerce and financial services – are expecting significant increases in IT security staffing.
