Devices are typically allowed to do whatever they'd like on a work network, Potter said, with employers often not even knowing what these devices are up to.

Potter said companies should be able to keep an eye on devices that are running autonomously on their network. Businesses should also have a good sense of what's happening on the core of their own network before adding IoT devices to the edge, he said.   

Companies also have a problem with the desktop, server, networking, firewall and audit teams typically operating independently with their own structure and goals. Potter said it's important for businesses to have someone clearly in charge on security issues.
