Applying for a management position with no experience managing people

Here, you're skipping a step or two. If you want to get into a position responsible for managing people, a management job isn't the place to start, Quast says. Instead, look for opportunities that give you some people-managing experience, including raising your hand to lead a project team. You could even look for volunteer work in your community that will provide some experience managing others.
