Up to $530 billion a year in health care spending could be eliminated if consumers embrace a digital delivery system similar to what's used in online retailing platforms, Oliver Wyman said.
More specifically, the report cites $200 billion in savings helping ensure patients with chronic diseases take their medications per doctors' specifications. It also sees $150 billion in savings through the elimination of unnecessary medical tests, procedures and medication. The report cites the success of Aetna's iTriage app, which helps patients find the most appropriate and affordable care by searching a database of symptoms and probable causes.
