Logistics: Smart Apps = Smarter Shipping

"Apps are about to revolutionize freight shipping as much as they have other areas of the transportation industry," Oliver Wyman said in a statement about its report, which alluded to the success of ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft, which bank on mobile apps.

Smart trucking apps will replace fragmented and time-consuming legacy processes for freight shippers and carriers.

TECHNOLOGY OPPORTUNITY? Many "smart trucking" apps are being developed by technology companies, the Wyman report said. Apps will also help automate trucker billing and payment, as well as notifications for pickups and drop-offs, among other processes, the report noted.
