Grillo, of Atrion Communications, believes legacy applications that don't support centralized authentication pose the biggest challenge in blocking corporate applications from ex-employees. He also points to "older, conservative organizations" that probably have greater challenges in de-provisioning former employees than newer, nimbler businesses.

Meanwhile, Goodman, of BlueBridge Networks, believes organizations should spell out the terms of access to a new employee at the time he or she is hired, and address how it will be shut off once the person's employment ends.
