Westman said virtual doctor appointments are going to become more typical for patients because of the improvement in unified communications, thus leading to the implementation of more technology internally into the day-to-day workflow at a hospital or clinic as well as for the patient or customer themselves.

Soon, people will be seeking faster, more secure and simply better Internet services, which will lead to substantial market growth that solution providers can capitalize on.

Another reason why solution providers should start searching for opportunities in health care is because improved networking and unified communications technologies will start saving time, money and maybe even lives.

Westman said in some more rural areas of the country it can take two or three hours to drive to the nearest hospital, which could mean the difference between life and death.

"If someone has a stroke, the initial first few hours are critical," said Westman. "If they can connect with a doctor, the doctor can show them what to do to help the person immediately. Or if it's something different you can call and the doctor can say, 'No, it's only a scratch you don’t have to come in,' or 'yes, bring them in right away.'"
