Accucode's "crown jewel" right now is the InDemand service, Price said. Decoupling the division from the solution provider's other businesses so it could function independently was crucial for convincing other VARs to use the service in their own operations, he said.

How does Accucode prioritize solutions for special nurturing? For now, its priority is software as a service (SaaS) value propositions that could eventually drive at least $100 million in annual revenue. Price offers two other key pieces of advice.

First, hire great people who fit your culture, even if you don't know the role he or she will fill. Many individuals on the Accucode team were hired without a specific job in mind, because they worked well within its self-motivated style. A great example is the company's most effective recruiter: a specialist in military interrogation, who Price hired without a specific job in mind. Today, this individual screens all candidates joining the 80-person organization. If someone doesn't "fit" the culture, he or she won't advance to the next interview. "We interview for integrity and personal values," Price said.

Also, don't try to reinvent the wheel. Focus on solutions that are repeatable. That means using approaches that have worked for other clients and addressing issues or processes common across an industry, rather than specific to one company. "Simple represents the most sustainable and reliable approach to any problem," Price said.
