Accucode's Reinvention: From Mobile VAR To Business Incubator

Accucode started life almost 20 years ago as a VAR focused on retail point-of-sale (POS) and enterprise mobile solutions for data collection.

It was one of the first to successfully debut "depot" repair and maintenance services for mobile devices—an innovation that gave it an edge when competing against the likes of IBM in massive retail accounts. By guaranteeing that replacements were in customers' hands in hours rather than days, it redefined service levels.

"I had to figure out how to 'own' this for my customers," said Accucode founder and CEO Kevin Price.

But that was then, this is now. Accucode's current model more closely resembles a business-to-business tech incubator with expertise in process automation, rather than a traditional technology solution provider.

That's by design, according to Price. "We're good at the phase of developing a solution, of going out and proving it in the market, and developing an organic base," he said. "I want to sell those businesses to people who can invest and scale them."

Right now, the Centennial, Colo.-based company—which generated about $30 million in revenue last year—comprises a "collection" of businesses that handle a wide range of functions. They include InDemand Technologies, a managed service that other members of the high-tech channel can use with their clients; Accucode Nexus, a VAR partnership network; VelocityMail, an application for managing postage and mail logistics; turnkey solutions for warehouse management; and the AO: Bar application for liquor inventory management. That's in addition to its traditional IT consulting services.
