Your Home’s HVAC Has Been Hijacked

You can easily think of a nightmare scenario where you lose control over your automated heating system, smart front door and security system. Symantec warns that’s a very real possibility if an attacker can intercept IoT traffic and replace it with different command packets.

Symantec singled out Belkin’s WeMo connected switch in its report. At the time of its testing Symantec found the switch “did not require the user to provide authentication in order to connect to it. If the attacker is on the same network as the device, they can send any commands they want to the connected switch.”

Since Symantec discovered the vulnerability in Belkin’s WeMo switch the company has corrected the problem.
