Educate Employees

Insider threats are one of the leading causes of data breaches, led by social engineering, phishing and stolen credential attacks, according to the 2015 Verizon Data Breach Report. Many of these incidents are simply accidents, or the product of a lack of security education, the report said, with 30 percent coming from misdelivery of information, 17 percent from publishing nonpublic data to public servers, and 12 percent from insecure disposal of data. Three ways to ramp up cyber security education of employees in October include:

•    Holding sessions on how they can prevent accidental data disclosures,
•    Running phishing training exercises, and
•    Talking about social media best practices to prevent social engineering attacks.
