Why Do Employees Jump From Job To Job?

Does it seem as if you're always looking to replace someone who has left their job for something better?

If so, you have a lot of company, as 41 percent of workers across the United States are what ManpowerGroup Solutions calls "continuous candidates," or always looking for the next job opportunity.

That lies in contrast to the labor market of 30 or 40 years ago, when workers were more likely to stick with one employer until retirement. Manpower, which surveyed nearly 4,500 job seekers globally in October 2015, cited three factors behind the higher degree of job mobility, two of which are tied to the growth of information technology:

The use of contract workers. Technology firms, in particular, have led the way on contract employment worldwide. Because they have the fastest-changing skills requirements, using contractors allows them to not rely on skills within the organization that may become obsolete.

New ways of getting work done. Especially in the U.S., the popularity and visibility of the "gig economy," with companies like Uber and TaskRabbit redefining how people work.

Job insecurity. The layoffs and job losses in the wake of the Great Recession sent the message to both young and old workers that job security is not necessarily guaranteed.

ManpowerGroup Solutions, part of the workplace staffing firm ManpowerGroup, provides clients with human resources-related outsourcing services. It released its findings on "continuous candidates" this week in a 16-page report.

Why do they look? The reasons have slightly less to do with money. While 33 percent cited compensation and 12 percent benefits, 53 percent checked off non-monetary reasons, according to the ManpowerGroup study. Leading the way: opportunity for advancement, the type of work and schedule flexibility.
