An overwhelming percentage of IT professionals surveyed – 84 percent of entry- and mid-level employees and 87 percent of senior-level staff - said they're not expected to be available while they're on vacation. However, six percent of entry- and mid-level staffers are expected to be accessible at any hour, compared with just one percent of senior-level professionals.

What constitutes an emergency that's worth interrupting a vacation? That's something a business needs to define, Hayman says. "I think it is a problem for IT professionals [to a point where] employers need to be extremely clear about their expectations for their employees while they're on vacation."
